Wilma T. Weeks, born on April 3, 1936 to the late Catherine Guyot. She passed away peacefully at home on May 9, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Malachi Weeks and their cherished son, Malachi Weeks Jr.
Wilma was reared and educated in Richland County where she met a young bus driver who would eventually become her husband. Upon graduation in 1954, she married Malachi Weeks and together they reared four children. Wilma followed her husband around the country as a doting military spouse. Their travels took them as close to home as North Carolina and as far away as Texas and Alaska. Throughout their travels she stayed focused on raising her family and serving her community. A dedicated healthcare professional, Wilma worked for many years as a nurse, bringing compassion and healing to those in need. Her commitment to service extended far beyond her profession—she was also a lifelong volunteer 4-H leader, dedicated to shaping young minds and hearts through mentorship, leadership, and care.
Over the years, Wilma would start 4-H clubs at the military bases where they were stationed at. Teaching the youth how to sew, cook, bar-b-que, public speaking, model, and much more. The family eventually settled back on the home land on which she was raised in Columbia. Their home proudly displayed a sign that read “4-H Leader Lives Here” as it was essentially a mecca for the kids in the community and area to come hone their skills. Throughout her years, she produced several county, state and national winners in various projects.
Wilma loved spending time with her family. She encouraged and planned many of the family vacations, most of which were road trips. Some favorite destinations included Walt Disney World, Las Vegas, Niagara Falls, and St. Louis. Always with a camera in tow, she loved experiencing new things with them. Her grandkids were simply her joy. During spring, summer and winter breaks, her house was the one place they all insisted on being…camped out on her living room floor. Wilma made sure they not only had fun; but “learned by doing” (the 4-H slogan). They did crafts and projects, went to camps and volunteered in the community. Wilma also supported every activity they were involved in from ROTC, to sports, to cosmetology. She traveled great distances to let each one know they were loved and seen.
She is survived by her son William Weeks, Sr. (Cassandra) of Beaverton, OR; daughters Juliana Weeks and Juliet Weeks of Columbia, SC; her daughter-in-law Marian Weeks of Florence, SC; and her grandchildren William, Daniel, Jessica, Ronald (Kayla), Ashley (Antonio), Veronica, Melissa (Cedrik), and Christopher. Wilma was also blessed to be able to experience all her great-grandchildren, who brought her tremendous pride and joy especially in her last days: Sean, Colleen, Natalie, Caleb, Nova, Malachi, Morgan, and Karter; two sisters-in-law Mary Paige and Martha Kelly of Columbia, SC, two brothers-in-law McArthur Weeks (Sandye) of Columbia, SC and Richard Weeks (Rose) of Hornlake, MS and a host of Nieces, Nephews, Cousins, and Friends.
She will be remembered for her quiet strength, kind heart, and the legacy of love and service she leaves behind. Her presence will be deeply missed, but her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
