William H. Lewis Obituary

Mr. William Henry Lewis was born on Wednesday, September 20, 1939, in Enfield, North Carolina. He was the youngest son born to the late Wesley and Wessie Daniels Lewis. God, in His infinite mercy, gave him eternal rest on Saturday, October 18, 2025, in his 86th season surrounded by his loving family.

Affectionately called “Nukie” by his family, William received his formative education through the Halifax County Schools and was a graduate of Inborden High School, Enfield, NC. His first job was working on the farm with his father and brother. He had a love of motorcycles and sports cars. William chose to serve his country, enlisting in the United States Army, March 28, 1967. He was a 23-year veteran, rising to the rank of Sergeant First Class. After receiving an Honorable Discharge, William worked for the South Carolina Department of Corrections, Kirkland Correctional Institution, and the United States Postal Service from which he retired.

William was united in holy matrimony to the love of his life, Dorothy Bright, on January 14, 1968. They affectionately called each other “Sweetie” and walked together for 57 years, and together they were blessed with four beautiful children. William was a fun-loving man that enjoyed spending time with family, laughing and fellowshipping. He liked golfing, fishing, camping, and fueling up the family’s RV heading to any destination for relaxation. He had a sweet tooth for (Sweetie’s poundcakes and sweet potato pies).

His Christian journey included membership at Zion Pilgram Baptist Church, where he sang on the Jubilee Choir. He later joined Bethlehem Baptist Church, where he was a faithful and dedicated member attending service regularly until his health declined. He had a big heart and was always willing to give to others in need.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his only brother, Stoney Lewis; his son, Eric A. “Tony” Hunter; daughter, Earnestine Lewis; and grandson, Gerald L. Lewis, II

William leaves to cherish his loving memories his darling wife, Dorothy B. Lewis; loving children, James H. Lewis, Frederick Lewis, Gerald L. (Mary) Lewis, and Barbara Lewis, Louisville, KY; daughter-in-love, Linda Hunter, Enfield, NC; eight (8) grandchildren; seven (7) great-grandchildren; two (2) great-great grandchildren; aunt, Dorothy Speed, Alexandria, VA; nieces, Betty (Willis) Lewis Evans, Atlanta, GA; Wessie (Orin) Lewis King, Brooklyn, NY, and Allison Lewis, Brooklyn, NY; and a host of countless other loving relatives and dear friends, all of whom will dearly miss him.
