Walter Jackson Obituary

Walter Louis Jackson was born in Lugoff, South Carolina on November 10, 1939. He is predeceased by his mother Georgia L. Green Jackson and father Moses Jackson. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army on December 7, 1962 where he served in the 7th battalion 16th artillery as a steward and cook. While serving he was honored with the Sharpshooter and Good Conduct medals.

He was honorably discharged from his post on November 27, 1964. Soon after, he invested in the real estate industry.  After much success, he decided to embark on his next venture and opened 50 Minit Kleen Rite in 1971. Over the next 41 years, he expanded his business and opened several subsidiaries namely Sew-Rite Alterations, Allben Cleaners and Accurate Alterations.  He was inducted into the Jolly Belin Club by the International Fabricare Institute for “outstanding service to the fabricare industry”.

Most notably, Walter faithfully served his community. A strong believer in education as the primary catalyst for African American advancement, he tirelessly supported the efforts of Benedict College (of which he was a biology major for one year) and Allen University staff and students through donations, generous cleaning discounts, and employment opportunities.

Second to education, Walter believed that hard work and sacrifice were not only essential to career and business success, but an invariable requirement for personal growth.

Known by many for his orange Cadillac, and stylish dress (he would be remiss to not complete his suit attire with a matching fedora and pocket handkerchief) his constitution was that of pride and self-respect. The same virtues that he instilled in his children, nieces, nephews, and the several other young adults that he mentored throughout his lifetime.

A pillar of the local community, he was a proud member of many civic organizations such as the Townsmen Club.  He received successive certificates of appreciation from the Easter Seals organization for his generous contributions and unceasing support. In 2006, he was placed on the Wall of Tolerance by the National Campaign for Tolerance for taking a personal and public stand against social injustice.

Fiercely proud of his service to his country, he was a strong advocate for veteran’s assistance and recognition. In fact, he was recognized for his faithful support of America’s deserving veterans and their families by the U.S. Veterans of Foreign Wars. Further, he himself was officially inducted into the American Legion by the U.S. Congress in gratitude for his military service.

Walter Jackson left an indelible mark on the lives of all who were lucky enough to have known him – whether as an employee, friend, or community devotee. His words of wisdom are ingrained in many persons’ memories and it is those memories that will keep him ever present with us. To his close family and friends, the twinkle in his eye often coupled with an irresistible chuckle or a moment of jovial laughter will be deeply cherished.

For his children: Patrice, Chadwick, and Peri - his unwavering presence as a loving father, fearless protector, and sagacious guide are deeply ensconced in their hearts and will always be a source of comfort and encouragement.

Walter L. Jackson is survived by his children: Peri S. Jackson, Chadwick Smith and Patrice Evans; sister-in-law, Vivian Jackson, nephews Dwight (Brenda) E. Jackson Sr. and Stanley (Terri) Stokes, and his niece Natasha Stokes along with a host of family, loved ones, and friends.  He is predeceased by his brother, David Alexander Jackson, his sister Eula Mae (George-deceased) Stokes, and his nephew, Dwaine Alexander Jackson.
