Gunnery Sgt. Deacon Thomas Eugene Days, Sr., affectionately known by his siblings as “Man,” was born on November 26, 1950, in Columbia, SC, and raised by his grandparents, Zack and Elouise Days. On April 25, 2026, he completed his earthly journey after a season of extended illness, surrounded by the love of family and the peace he so deeply deserved. Born with a gentle spirit and a steadfast heart, he lived a life marked by quiet strength, generosity, and unwavering faith.
He was educated in the public schools of Richland County. After he graduated high school in 1969, he worked at Crafts Farrow State hospital on Farrow Road until he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. After serving faithfully and honorably, he retired from the Marine Corps as a Gunnery Sergeant. He then served in the United States Marine Corps Reserves until he again honorably retired after 36 years of service. To this day, his military buddies still call him “Gunny.”
Mr. Days worked at the SC Department of Corrections and later moved to the SC Department of Juvenile Justice with a rank of Captain. After his retirement from the state, he began another career with the Environmental Services System.
He was a man who believed in showing up for his family, for his friends, and for his community. His wisdom was steady, his humor warm, and his kindness unshakable. Even in times of challenge he carried himself with dignity and gratitude, reminding those around him to cherish the blessings in each day.
Mr. Days’s legacy is woven into the lives he touched, the lessons he taught, the encouragement he offered, and the love he shared without hesitation. He was a man of great faith who loved the Lord. He also loved to sing and did not mind using his voice to let the world know that God is still in charge. He leaves behind a lifetime of memories that will continue to inspire and uplift all who know him.
At an early age, Mr. Days joined Zion Canaan Baptist Church. He later joined Fellowship Baptist church, with his wife Maxsena, who was a long-time member of the church. They both served at Fellowship Baptist church until their health failed. Though he has transitioned from this life, the imprint of his presence still remains, a reminder of a life well lived, a faith well kept, and a love that endures.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Maxsena Days; his grandparents, Zack and Elouise Days; his mother Blondell Days Polk, and Aunt Mildred Gladden; uncles Zack Jr., and Elmer Days; and a sister, Carolyn Brown.
Mr. Days’s memories will be forever cherished by his devoted son, Thomas E. Days, Jr. and his wife Natasha, Hopkins, SC; loving sisters, Frances Brazell, Charlotte, NC, Ella Wider, Columbia, SC, Barbara Johnson, Wadesboro, NC, and Sherrin Brazzle, Wadesboro, NC; caring brother, Michael (Hattie) Polk, Charlotte, NC; nine nieces and nephews, Garrek Wider, Derrick Brown, Rickie Kennedy, Autrell Brazzle, Antoine and Santoine Polk, Latasha Brazzle, Zachery Brazzle and Danielle Johnson, and a host other loving relatives and dear friends, all of whom will dearly miss him.
