Obituary

Shelia Denise McGriff was born on August 18, 1968, in Bridgeport, Connecticut. She was the middle child of the late Reverend Odell and Shirley Belk McGriff. She entered eternal peace on Wednesday, August 23, 2023.

Shelia dedicated her life to Christ at an early age and was an active member of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Columbia, SC, where she served on the Personnel Ministry. She was educated in Richland County Schools and was a graduate of Columbia High School, Class of 1986. After high school graduation, Shelia attended Livingston College in Salisbury, NC. where she completed her Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Work. While at Livingstone College, Shelia was also initiated into the Alpha XI Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority, Inc. in the Spring of 1990.

Shelia was trained in the field of Social Work and possessed a love for social justice and cared deeply about the welfare of others. This passion for others led her to a successful and rewarding career in Probation and Parole. She also spent several years working as a Victims Advocate in Lexington and Richland Counties. Most recently, Shelia found her true passion working as a Substitute Teacher in elementary schools in Richland County School District #1.

Shelia was an avid reader and enjoyed immersing herself in all types of literary works. She possessed a brilliant mind, a loving heart and a kind, gentle soul. She was a woman of integrity and fairness, often advocating for those with no voice, while always seeking out the best in everyone.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother William Gardell McGriff.

Shelia cherished her family and friends, and is survived by her sister, Sharon McGriff Williams (Keith). Although Shelia never married or had children, she adored her nieces and nephews: Lindsay A. McGriff, Kennith, A. McGriff, Kiara D. Williams and great nieces and nephews; William C. Balthrope, Carson D. Butler, Cire M. Bunn, and Ashe McGriff. Lovingly, Shelia leaves behind a host of Uncles, Aunts, Cousins, and Dear friends.

Anyone who knew Shelia Denise McGriff would agree that she was a true "fashionista" who gave this world many gifts including encouragement, inspiration, and love. Like ripples on a pond, her legacy will continue forever.
