Our beloved Mrs. Shearlyann “Shearly” Hammond Rock retired from her life on earth and entered eternal rest on July 31, 2020, in her home.
Shearly was born the fourth of eight children on September 16, 1950, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Lucious and Clara Mae Hammond, Jr. in Sumter, South Carolina. Shearly received her early education in the Sumter Public School system and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1968. Shortly after graduating, she began working for Campbell Soup, Inc where she continued employment through the company’s numerous name changes. While employed, Shearly attended Central Carolina Tech where she received her Nursing Assistant certification. She was also a Certified Floral Designer and created floral arrangements for weddings and other special occasions during her spare time. After forty-two years of service, she retired in 2010.
While attending a gathering at a family friend’s home in late 1968, Shearly met the love of her life, Elanda “Johnny” Rock, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Abraham and Laura Rock, Sr. They soon began dating and later married on March 15, 1969. This union bore two beautiful gifts that would be named Andre’ and Felicia.
Shearly joined St. Mark United Methodist Church in 1970. Throughout her many years of worship, she was a member of the choir, an Usher, Stewardess, member of the Nomination Committee, Nursing Ministry and Pastor Parish Relations Committee. She also started the children’s choir under the leadership of the Rev. J. C. Lane.
Shearly was truly a woman of quiet dignity and was dedicated to her family. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister and friend. She was a woman of few words that spoke volumes. She had a sweet and gentle spirit and always sought to speak life and encouragement. Shearly’s home was often the place for family gatherings which holds many family memories. She loved cooking large family dinners and reading her Bible. However, to truly know Shearly is to know not to call her Monday- Friday between 1:00-2:00 pm because she would be watching Days of Our Lives and was not going to answer the call. It is certain that Shearly left an imprint on the heart of everyone whom she had contact. Though she will be deeply missed, we can take these cherished memories of her life to remind us to seek joy in the many circumstances we encounter during our temporary stay here on earth.
Shearly was preceded in death by her husband, Elanda “Johnny” Rock; two brothers, Lucious Albert Hammond and Ricky Hammond; one brother-in-law, Abraham Rock, Jr. and one nephew, Mario Scott.
Left to cherish Shearly’s memories are her loving son, Andre’ Rock of Charlotte, NC; her dedicated daughter, Felicia (Anthony) Tyler of Newport News, VA; one gentle grand-daughter, Anorion Kennedy of Sumter, SC; three caring grandsons, Tyhier Tyler, Tayvon Tyler, and Trace Tyler all of Newport News, VA; two wonderful honorary grandchildren, Michael Kenndy and Jayden Kennedy of Sumter, SC; three sisters, Loretta(Levi) Johnson Sr. of Columbia, SC, Katherine(Curtis) Robinson of Midway, GA and Denise(Herbert Lee) Heyward of Sumter, SC; two brothers, Dennis(Shirley) Hammond and Cleveland (Jennifer) Hammond both of Sumter, SC; two sisters-in-law, Rosa Lee (Aaron) Daney and Janice Rock of Sumter, SC; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and a host of relatives and dear friends who are grieved by her passing.
