Ms. Shannon Joi Rogers, beloved daughter, sister, aunt, niece, cousin, and friend departed this earthly life on the evening of November 29, 2021, while in Cozumel, Mexico. She was born in Columbia, SC on October 14, 1980, to Leroy Rogers and the late Corinne Peay Rogers.
Shannon accepted Christ as her personal Savior at an early age and was an active member of Concord Fellowship Baptist Church in Columbia, SC. She was known to send uplifting scriptures to family, friends, and coworkers. She would show up unexpectedly just to see how you were doing, bolstering saying “Hey Y’all…What’s Up”.
Shannon excelled academically and was selected and attended an educational trip to Australia/New Zealand while in middle school. At the age of 16, she joined the Columbia Awareness Team that focused on youth wellness and health which influenced her career choices in therapy and counseling. She was a graduate of W. J. Keenan High School, class of 1998. She attended East Carolina University in Greenville, NC where she earned her B.S. in Recreational and Leisure Studies. She later went on to Webster University and obtained a M.S. in Community Counseling. She received her certification as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, and she used her skills in many walks of life.
Shannon worked at Prisma Health in Behavioral Health where she provided individual and group counseling. She also worked in the ER Department where she evaluated patients and offered mental health assessments. She was known to have led team building activities and spirit week. After many years at Prisma Health, she joined the team at Blue Cross Blue Shield where she was employed at the time of her passing as well as Three Rivers Behavioral Health. Shannon also started a private practice, New Insight Counseling & Consultant, LLC.
Shannon was inducted into the ETA Mu Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. at East Carolina University in 2004. After graduation, she briefly transferred into Zeta Pi Sigma Alumnae Chapter in Greenville. Upon her move back to Columbia she became affiliated with Beta Epsilon Sigma Alumnae Chapter. On December 12, 2021, she will be recognized and named as a Charter Line Member of Nu Nu Sigma Alumnae Chapter, Newberry, SC.
Shannon had such a sweet spirit that simply lit up a room upon entering. She loved traveling but cruising was her favorite. She was always willing to help others in any way that she could. She enjoyed her work as a counselor, and it was truly a calling on her life. Shannon volunteered at Transitions. She also worked with Wounded Warriors providing activity therapy. She showed love and offered hope to everyone she encountered.
Shannon Joi was the apple of our eyes. On the same day of Shannon’s transition, God welcomed her maternal grandmother, Gaynell Bush Rogers Glenn home as well. Shannon leaves to cherish precious memories, her loving father Leroy Rogers, a dear brother who was her best friend, Cedric (April), three nieces that she loved so dearly, Taylor Gabrielle Ross, Nadia McKenzie, and Kennedy Amya Rogers; a host of uncles, aunts, other relatives and friends.
