Sarah Simmons Obituary

Mrs. Sarah M. Jennings Simmons was born on April 27, 1937 to the late Deacon & Sister Oriter Jennings Sr.  Sarah transitioned into eternal rest on Saturday, October 5, 2020 at the Brian Center in Columbia, SC.

She was reared and educated in the Richland County Public Schools in the Waverly Community.  She met and married Mr. Clarence Simmons.  The two adopted one son, Clarence Simmons, Jr.

“Aunt Sarah” was a lifelong member of the United House of Prayer for All People.  She served on the Willing Workers and the Sr. Ushers auxiliaries until her health failed.  Aunt Sarah was passionate about helping people.  Before the House of Prayer relocated from the opposite side of Read (Bishop C.M. Bailey) Street, Aunt Sarah would come to church early on Sunday mornings and fix breakfast for everyone attending Sunday School, using money from her own pocket, without expecting anything in return.  Later she started a candy stand where she bought and sold many types of candy, cookies, drinks, and chips.  She had something for every age.  Many times, her customers did not have enough money and she would say “Oh go ahead you can bring it back to me”.  Often times she would not get the change, but would never remind you; instead, she would extend credit again if needed.  Aunt Sarah had a giving heart full of love for everyone.

Sarah was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Clarence Simmons; both parents, Deacon Oriter & Sister Frankie Mae Jennings, Sr.; four brothers, Oriter Sr., James, Charles and Gary; one sister, Catherline Turnipseed.

Aunt Sarah leaves to cherish many memories, four brothers, Apostle Elijah (Sarah) Jennings of St. Petersburg, FL, Elder Calvin Jennings of Estill, SC, Elder Leonard (Vivian) Jenning Sr. and Brother John L. (Anna) Jennings both of Columbia, SC; two sisters, Earline Fuller and Barbara Craft, both of Columbia, SC and one special niece, Brenda Fuller who assisted in her needs while at The Brian Center and prepared her for the final days.
