Sadie Edger Shell was born March 17, 1940, in Blythewood (Richland County), the beloved daughter of the late John and Leila McDaniel Edger. Surrounded by her loving family who will continue to honor her legacy by living their lives to the fullest, Sadie made her transition from her earthly life on Friday, September 15, 2023, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s/Dementia .
Educated in the public schools of Richland County, Sadie was married to the late Virgin Emanuel Shell for over 53 years.
She retired from the South Carolina Department of Mental Health (Midlands Center) after 30 years of service.
Mrs. Shell was a dedicated and faithful member of Zion Canaan Baptist Church where she served on various organizations including the Jubilee Choir.
It would be wrong to say Sadie lost her battle because she never stopped fighting. No matter how sick she was, she was always determined. When anyone else would have broken, Sadie stayed strong. Through her, we know what resilience and perseverance truly looks like.
The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Sadie, she loved a quiet evening baking her well-known cakes and pies, which were enjoyed by everyone in the community who knew her.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Robert J. Edgers, and John Edgers; sisters, Charlotte A. Young, Jessie A. Mack, and Josephine A. Nash.
Her precious memories will be remembered by her devoted, loving, and caring son, Virgil Thomas (Gloria) Shell of Columbia, SC; daughters, Ernestine (John) Shell Johnson of Hinesville, GA, and Bernestine Shell Jones of Columbia, SC; grandchildren, Virgil T. Shell, Jr., Vance Shell, Iris L. Johnson, Nicole D. Johnson, and Amber Bolar, all of whom will miss her dearly, but rejoice that she is now resting with the Lord. We would like to extend a special thanks to Kimberly Anderson for devoting numerous untiring days and hours to caring for and assisting our mother during difficult times.
