Ruby Muller Caughman at the age of 94, passed away on March 25, 2021, at Watercrest Senior Living Facility in Columbia, South Carolina. She was born on March 24, 1927, in Lexington County, South Carolina, to the late Booker T., Sr. and Corrie Lee Muller. Ruby’s early education was in the public schools of Lexington County, SC. Ruby graduated from Lakeview High School and continued her education completing courses in cosmetology at the Pope Beauty School in Columbia, SC.
At an early age Ruby joined Mt. Pisgah A.M.E. Church in Cayce, SC. She later became a dedicated member of Turner Memorial A.M.E Church in West Columbia, SC. Ruby faithfully served in many capacities to include: Gold Star Member of Turner Memorial A.M.E. Church (50 plus years membership); Member, Stewardess Board; Member, Pastor’s Advocate Board; Member, Women’s Missionary Society; and Member, Jubilee Choir. Ruby also served as Co-Chair of the Floral Committee.
Ruby was a beautician early in her career and also worked as a Nurse’s Aide and Nursery School Teacher. Ruby always aspired to be a nurse and she became a Mental Health Technician working at the C.M. Tucker Nursing Care Center in Columbia, SC. She retired from C.M. Tucker in 1988 after 15 years of dedicated service.
Ruby married Jesse N. Caughman, Jr. on the evening of March 12, 1953 at the Parsonage of Turner Memorial AME Church. Out of this union, four children were born.
Ruby was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and loved spending time with her family. Next to God her family was the most important thing in life. Ruby loved to cook and her five-flavor pound cake was a favorite of family and friends.
Ruby was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse N. Caughman, Jr.; her parents, Booker T. Muller, Sr. and Corrie Lee Muller; her sister, Stephanie Johnson; her brothers, James Muller, Frank Muller, and Booker T. Muller, Jr; and one granddaughter, Ashley Hicks-Caughman.
Her memories will be cherished by her three sons, Bruce (Deborah) Caughman, Allan (Corsha) Caughman, Stanley (Penelope) Caughman; one daughter, Shiann (Carl) Owens; one stepdaughter, Maeward (Leonard) Belk; her sister, Annie Ruth (Frank) Dowdy; her brothers, Henry Muller and Willie (Margaret) Muller; her aunt, Hattie Kinley; nine grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
