Roman Jackson Obituary

Roman Jackson, age 73, of Columbia, South Carolina, went from labor to reward on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, at Emory University Hospital, surrounded by his beloved family. He was born on October 23, 1952, in Moncks Corner, South Carolina, to the late James Brown and Betty Jean Jackson Jefferson.

Roman attended the Berkeley County Public School System and Berkeley Training High School in Moncks Corner, South Carolina, and later enlisted in the United States Army. He married his wife, Estelle Jenkins Jackson, on December 30, 1976, and was blessed with three daughters: Crystal, Stephanie, and Melissa.

Roman proudly and honorably served his country in the United States Army for 24 years. During his distinguished military career, he traveled extensively, including assignments in New York, Washington, Hawaii, Germany, Australia, Egypt, Korea, Japan, Alaska, Somalia, and Haiti. His service reflected a deep sense of duty, discipline, and His commitment to excellence.

Following his retirement from the military, Roman continued his professional life with Atlas Vending and Canteen Vending, where he worked for several years before fully retiring.

A man of strong faith, Roman was an ordained Deacon and a devoted servant of God. He lived his life guided by Christian principles and was known for his steady character, wisdom, and willingness to serve others. In his leisure time, he was a loyal and lifelong fan of the Washington Redskins, now known as the Washington Commanders.

Roman was a devoted husband, loving father, and proud grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife, Estelle Jenkins Jackson; three daughters, Dr. Crystal M. Gillis (Shawndaris Gillis), Stephanie O. Osborne (Dishon Osborne), and Melissa A. Jackson; and two cherished grandchildren, Caleb Osborne and Brooke Osborne. He also held a special and meaningful role in the life of Carmail Cooper.

Roman was preceded in death by his parents, James Brown and Betty Jean Jackson Jefferson, and his brothers, James Jackson and Michael Jefferson. He is survived by his siblings, Robert Lee Jefferson (Carol), Herbert Jefferson, Vera Jefferson McCray, and Dr. Stacie Jefferson-Oliver (Greg); in-laws Louis Jenkins, Jr.(Emma), Dorothy Jenkins, Willie Mae Anderson, and Gloria Taylor (Carlton), along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
