Ricky Joseph Bates was born July 21, 1991, in Columbia, South Carolina, the son of the late Uzel and Betty Thomas Bates. He departed this earthly life on Sunday, September 21, 2025, in Columbia, South Carolina.
Ricky was a beloved son, brother, soon-to-be father, uncle, cousin, and friend. He was outspoken, loyal, reliable, and welcoming to everyone he met. Ricky had a gift for making those around him feel loved and valued, and he never hesitated to remind his family and friends just how much they meant to him. His infectious smile and protective nature will be cherished and remembered forever.
Educated in the public schools of Richland County School District One, Ricky carried a lifelong love of laughter and joy. He was known for his quick humor, his love of telling jokes, and his ability to brighten any room he entered. Ricky was also deeply photogenic and enjoyed capturing life’s sweetest moments. Above all, he was filled with excitement and anticipation as he prepared to embrace fatherhood. Though he is no longer physically with us, he has left a legacy of love and laughter to all those who loved and knew him.
In addition to his parents, Ricky was preceded in death by his brothers, Joseph Gillie and Michael Uzell Bates; and his sister, Linda Moody.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his sisters, Gloria G. Kelly, Priscilla G. Thomas, Patricia G. Young, Queenie B. Dunlap, Mary G. Mayo, Kimberly Bates, Psidarius Archie and Destiny Bates; brothers, Warren Bates and Adam Bates; special niece, Brittany Young; a very special friend, Janiece Gillings; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other loving relatives and dear friends who will hold his memory close to their hearts.
