Sergeant Rachel DeVorne Jones Green was born on July 22, 1952, in Columbia, South Carolina the beloved daughter of the late Jim Bob and Jessie Bell Watts Jones. She departed this earthly journey at Prisma Health System on Tuesday, September 27, 2022.
Rachel was educated in the public schools of Richland County District One. She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1970. She went to work for many years as a Sergeant at Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center from which she retired after many years of service.
At an early age, Rachel joined Zion Pilgrim Baptist Church in Columbia, South Carolina where she served faithfully until her health declined. She was currently a member of Love Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of Rev. Doctor Raymond Richburg.
Rachel enjoyed reading the Bible and meditating daily. She also enjoyed listening to gospel music and music from the 60’s and 70’s era. She enjoyed spending time with friends, her grandchildren, and her great-granddaughter. She was very passionate about advocating for developmentally disabled individuals.
Rachel was also preceded in death by her husband, Walter Green; daughter, Jessica DeVorne Green; son, Ricardo Calvin Jones, Sr.; brothers, John Belton Jones, and Gregory Earl Miller.
Rachel, leaves to cherish her precious memory, Darlene L. Jones, her loving and caring daughter-in-law; three grandchildren, Shaun (Shanae) Hewlett of Peachtree, Georgia; Earlene Thais Jones, Buford, Georgia; and Corporal Ricardo Calvin Jones, Jr. of Fort Meade, Maryland; one ( 1) great granddaughter, Ariyah Hewlett of Peachtree Corners, Georgia: six (6) loving sisters, Mary Jones Boykin, Blythewood, South Carolina; Barbara Walker of Harrison, Tennessee; Wyonia J. Burke of Branchville, South Carolina; Sallie Bell (Ernest) Peterson of Sumter, South Carolina; Princess (Kenneth) Wise, and Veronica Johnson, both of Columbia, South Carolina; and nine (9) sisters-in-law, Sallie B. Spigner, of Hillside, New Jersey; Mary Shiver of Newark, New Jersey; Claudia (Nathaniel) Smith, Indianapolis, Indiana; Debra Walker, Betty Shiver, Mary Boyles Miller, all of Columbia, South Carolina; and, Geraldine Alston, Patricia (Lawrence) Thompson, Constance (Charles) Dingle, all of Hopkins, South Carolina; and three brothers-in-law, Elijah (Margaret) Green, Jr., Joseph (Debra) Green, both of Columbia, South Carolina; and Ernest (Willadean) Green of Hopkins, South Carolina; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
