Mr. Otis Barr, Jr. also known as “Brother” by his siblings and “Uncle Brother” by his nieces and nephews, went home to be with the Lord on June 20, 2021. He was the second born to the late Otis and Mary Barr on September 5, 1938 in Columbia, SC.
Otis was a 1956 graduate of C.A. Johnson High School. After high school he was drafted into the US Army and served 2 years active and 4 years in the Army Reserves. He attended Columbia Commercial College after his military obligation. He was a hard worker and a devoted employee with the US Postal Service where he served as a Postal Clerk and Expeditor. After 50 years of service, he retired in 2019. Otis worshipped and served on the nurse’s guild, usher board and as a trustee as well as any other capacity needed at Antioch Baptist Church in Columbia.
Otis was a collector of hats and had accumulated 150 hats. He enjoyed watching basketball and football. He was an avid bowler and was a part of several bowling leagues. He enjoyed learning new information from legal programs he watched on tv such as Judge Judy and Judge Mathis. He also read the state newspaper every day.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter and the apple of his eye, Candy Barr Bowen and his sister, Rosemary Jones.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 24 years, Evangelist Kathy Barr of Columbia, SC; sons from a previous marriage, Otis (April) N. Barr of Atlanta, GA, Kelvin Barr of Raleigh, NC; stepdaughter, Regina (Jason) Ricks of Columbia, SC; granddaughters, Hope Noelle Bowen of Jacksonville, Fl and Chloe Barr of Atlanta, GA; grandsons, Christopher Barr of Atlanta, Ga, Darius Ricks and Jaylin Ricks of Columbia, SC; son-in law, Stephen Bowen of Jacksonville, FL; siblings, Shirley Snodey of Pittsburgh, PA, Carolyn Kennedy, Brenda (Jacob) Smith, Theodore (Gloria) Barr and Susan (Andrew) Jones all of Columbia, SC; a tiny little bodyguard (pup), his shadow, named Lady and a host of other loving relatives and friends whom will miss him dearly.
