Octavius Xavier Smith, lovingly known to many as Big Oct, was born October 18, 1991, in Augusta, Georgia, the son of Towanda Smith and Kenneth Lee Sr. On Saturday, January 3, 2026, he passed away at the age of 34, his life tragically cut short by an act of senseless violence, leaving a void that can never be filled. Though his time with us ended far too soon, the impact he made on those who knew him will continue to shine brightly.
Octavius made his home in Columbia, South Carolina, where he built his life, raised his family, and formed deep connections with those around him. He was raised with unwavering love by his grandparents, Beverly and the late Richard Leach Sr. Their guidance and affection shaped him into the man he became—kindhearted, joyful, and full of life.
Octavius received his education in Columbia, South Carolina, where he attended Gibbes Middle School and later Eau Claire High School. During those years, he formed lifelong friendships and built the foundation of the man he would become.
To know Octavius was to know laughter, warmth, and light. He had a natural gift for lifting spirits and bringing smiles to weary faces. No matter what the circumstance, he aimed to brighten the day of everyone around him. Today, as we gather to honor his memory, we choose not to dwell in sorrow, but to celebrate the life he lived and the joy he so freely shared. In his honor, we encourage everyone to make someone’s day a little brighter—just as he always did.
Octavius was the proud owner of Metro Towing and Recycling, a business that reflected his passion for cars and his dedication to hard work. He was known for his generosity and would give the shirt off his back without hesitation to anyone in need. Above all, Octavius was a devoted father. His love for his children was immeasurable, evident from the very moment he first held them. He was not only a provider but a role model—steadfast, loving, and present.
In addition to his grandfather, he was also preceded in death by his maternal great‑grandparents, Louis Parker Sr. and Effie (Louise) Parker; maternal grandfathers, Richard Leach Sr. and Willie Smith; paternal grandfather, John Lee; his uncle, Dwaine Blount; and niece, Kenniya Lee.
Octavius leaves to cherish his memory his beloved children, Octavius Smith Jr. (known as Jr.), Nassir Smith, and Jamison Smith; mother, Towanda Smith; father, Kenneth Lee Sr., grandmothers, Beverly Leach and Ann Lowrry; brothers, Jeffrey Myers, Daquan Lee, and Kenneth Lee Jr.; sisters, Kennisha Smith and Felicia Borum; a host of nieces and nephews, and other loving relatives and dear friends all of whom loved him deeply.
