Naomi Hayes

Naomi Elizabeth Finch Hayes was born January 22, 1947, in Columbia, SC. She was the second oldest of six children born to Lucinda Byrd Finch. Her sister, Mildred Finch, brother, Francis (Frank) Finch, and niece, Tameka Finch, preceded her in death.

Early in her life, Naomi was raised by Lucinda's brother, Gabriel Byrd, and his wife, Sara. After Sara's death, she rejoined her mother and siblings.

 Naomi attended Booker T. Washington High School in Columbia, SC. While in high school, she met Eugene William Hayes, Sr., and they later married. The couple welcomed three children to this union, Eugene William, Jr., Stacey Patrice, and Derrick Lamont. In 2022, Derrick, preceded her in death.

Naomi worked for many years as an assistant to Dr. Eugene Lilliewood until her health required that she resign her duties. Even though her illness limited her activities as it progressed, Naomi found enjoyment in life. Her daughter, Stacey, served not only as her primary caregiver, but also as her “event planner” and travel buddy. Naomi enjoyed spending time at the adult care center, traveling to the beach and cities, shopping, binge-watching episodes of “Jeopardy,” and spending time with her immediate and extended family.

On Friday, June 6, 2025, Naomi passed peacefully from labor to reward, reuniting with her son, mother, siblings, and other family members.

Naomi leaves to cherish her wonderful memories her loving son, Eugene (Vanessa) Hayes, Jr.; loving and caring daughter, Stacey Hayes; grandsons, Derrick Hayes, Jr., and Cameron Hayes; granddaughters, Arnisse Washington, and Ariel Hayes; brother, Cecil (Patricia) Finch; sisters, Nancy Chinn, and Marian (Nathaniel) Long; five nephews, five nieces, three great-nephews, five great-nieces; five great-great nieces and nephews, and a host of cousins, other relatives, and friends, all of whom will dearly miss her.
