Minister Herman Core Obituary

Herman Core was born March 17, 1951 in Wayne County, North Carolina to Jessie James Core and Elnora Walls Core. He passed away peacefully in his sleep on September 29, 2020 at Rice Estates Rehabilitation Center.

He was educated in Wayne County Public Schools and graduated from Dillard High school class of 1969. Immediately after high school he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served in Vietnam where he was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal for his acts of courage during the crash of a F4 Phantom Fighter Jet. He continued his education at St. Phillips College (Associates of Respiratory Therapy), Texas State University (Bachelor Science, Masters in Public Health), University of South Carolina PHD-Public Health Fellowship. He retired from Department of Health and Environmental Control - Public Health/Maternal and Child Health.

After receiving Christ as his personal savior in the early 1990s, he was a dedicated member of Friendship Baptist Church in Hopkins, SC. He was an ordained Deacon and then an ordained minister where he served faithfully until his health declined. A lifelong member of the NAACP he was very active in the Lower Richland Community including Lower Richland High school Parent Teacher Association, East Columbia Youth Basketball League, and the Lower Richland Ministerial Alliance. When he wasn’t serving in the church or in the community. He enjoyed classic American cinema starring Chuck Norris, Steven Segal, and Charles Bronson and Sanford & Son reruns.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Jessie and Elnora Core; step-mother Margaret House Core; siblings Bettie Jean Carlisle-Simmons, James Ray Core, Edna Patricia Core Fuller, Christine House Battle.

He is survived by his son, Marcum Edward Core, sister Betty Coley Williams (Curtis), brothers Joseph Core (Carolyn), Kenneth Core, Alphonso Battle (Christine), Annette Whitley, and a host of special nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
