Michael Murray Obituary

Michael Angelo Murray also known as “Big Mike” or “Perk” was born on November 16, 1966, in York, Pennsylvania. He was the youngest of seven children born to the late Thomas and Elizabeth (Grant) Murray. The Lord called him home on Tuesday, February 25, 2020, in Columbia, South Carolina.

Michael attended the York City School District and graduated from William Penn Senior High School in 1984. After graduating, he joined the United States Army as a Combat Engineer. During his 23 years of service, he served honorably in support of Operations Desert Shield/Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Additionally, his assignments included tours in Europe, South East Asia, and in the United States. After retiring from the Army, he enrolled in the University of Phoenix to pursue his Bachelor of Science Degree in Information Technology. With his degree, he was employed for the state of South Carolina for several years.

Michael’s hobbies included drawing, fishing, and following his favorite NFL team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and most of all playing basketball. His love of the game earned him several district titles during high school He also played for each of his assigned Army units. His love of basketball was a cherished memory that he and his daughter Ciera shared and his love for art and drawing was a special bond he shared with his daughter Mikayla.

On May 13, 1988, Michael was united in marriage to his wife Cosandra and together their union allowed them to raise 2 beautiful daughters, Ciera and Mikayla.

Michael is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas J. Murray Sr. and Elizabeth Grant Murray; two brothers, James Singleton and Thomas J. Murray Jr.

Michael leaves to mourn his loss, his wife Cosandra McQueen Murray of Columbia, SC; his daughters Ciera McQueen of San Antonio, TX and Mikayla Murray of Columbia, SC. Three grandchildren, Nya, Isaiah, and Aryah of San Antonio, TX; his brother Anthony A. Murray of York, PA. Cynthia Dixon and Cassandra Murray of York, PA; Anita Murray of Newport News, VA.  His brother in law, Julius W. McQueen, Jr. (Ernestine) and sister in law, Paula V. Price.  Also, a host of nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends.
