Melvin T. Rosser Obituary

Melvin T. Rosser was born on April 16, 1951, in Newport News, Virginia, the beloved son of the late Herman and Kathleen Rosser. He departed this life on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, in the comfort of his home in Columbia, SC, with his wife, Ruby Mae Rosser and his daughter, Angela Christy by his side.

Melvin graduated from Newport News High School, joined the United States Army immediately after, and proudly served his country for 20 years. He retired having achieved the rank of Sergeant First Class (SFC).  During his tenure he received many ribbons, medals, and commendations, with his Vietnam Service Medal personally being one his most honorable. Following his service years he also drove for Greyhound Bus Lines, worked at the Wise Potato Chip Factory, and ran a family commercial cleaning company.

He was a proud enforcer of spiritual and earthly laws. He will be remembered for how much he enjoyed telling people what to do, which lead him to become a correctional officer for Richland County Dept. of Corrections until he retired in 2012.

Melvin T. Rosser, fondly named and known as “Papa” was a God fearing, hardworking man. He believed in taking care of his family and giving back to his community as well disabled veterans and their families. The American Legion and Disabled Veterans of America were just two of the many organizations he became a member of and faithfully donated. Even after retiring he liked to stay on the move. When he wasn’t chauffeuring his wife around Columbia, he loved working in his yard, watching westerns and shining his purple Corvette. Our Papa was a giver; this world will miss his generous spirit.

He is now joined with his Heavenly Father above and many loved ones that preceded him in death.

Leaving to cherish his memories his wife, Ruby Mae Rosser of Columbia, SC; four children, Angela Christy, Issac Laurie, Denise Laurie, and Michael Laurie; three grandchildren; Caria Gorritz (Michael) Taylor, Cortney Christy and Mario Laurie; eight great grandchildren and many other loving relatives and dear friends, all of whom will dearly miss him.
