Melvin Reid Obituary

Our beloved Melvin Lee Reid, 72, entered into eternal peace on Saturday, June 30, 2019 at his home in Pinewood, SC.

Mel was born on March 8, 1947 in Wayne County, North Carolina to the late Mary M. and Matthew D. Reid. He received his education in Wayne County, NC and Warwick County, VA public schools.

At the age of 18 he ventured out on his own and became a professional long-distance truck driver. He continued this work for 52 years. He engaged in every possible transport available in the continental United States, Canada and also South America. He hauled moving and storage, freight, cargo, livestock, fuel, construction equipment, and logging. He also was driving instructor, teaching others to do the same. In 2008 he gave up the “big riggs” and settled in South Carolina as a farmer. Mel continued to do odd jobs such as a driving school buses, and acting as a handy man. He was able to repair almost anything and became a blessing to his community, especially the sick and shut in and everyone else who needed his skills.

Above all, Mel was a family man who loved his family more than life itself. He gave his all every opportunity he could without question.

Mel was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Glennie May Carter, Betty Jean Watts, and Evelyn Watford; brothers, Matthew David, William Edward, and James Thedric; and his son, Melvin Lee Reid, Jr.

Mel leaves his loving memories to be cherished by his wife, Yvonne Denise Anthony Reid; daughters, Anita Watts, Judy Reid, Melissa Roberts, Valorie Graham, and Claudia Williams; sister, Christine Reid; brothers, George Wayne, Donald Ray and Charles Linwood Reid; brothers-in-law, Marcel Anthony and Basher Anthony; nieces, Roshe and Iyonna Anthony; and a host of over 150 nieces and nephews, cousins and friends who will all miss him dearly.
