Mattie Lee Cunningham Alston was born on June 23, 1934, in Fairfield County, South Carolina. She was a child of twelve children born to the late Lewis and Sally Harrison Cunningham. Our beloved mother was called home by the Lord on Friday, January 2, 2026. From an early age, Mrs. Mattie Lee Alston showed a natural grace and unwavering strength. She had a profound sense of compassion, always uplifting those around her with her kindness.
She was preceded in death by; her parents, Lewis and Sally Harrison Cunningham; her husband, James Alston; eleven siblings; her daughter Cheyenne Lyerly; her granddaughter Candra Alston; her great-granddaughter Malaysia Boykin.
She is survived by her beloved children, James (Vernelle) Alston, Ray (deceased Cheyenne) Lyerly, Sr.; Carl Alston and Gayle (Christopher Hawkins) Alston, who brought her immense joy. Her cherished grandchildren, Jacqueline (Freddie) McClinton; Rev. Victoria (Eric) Huguenin; Adarryl (Dawn) Gilmore; Ray (Letrisha Armour) Lyerly, Jr. James Devar (Monica) Alston and Tevin (Angelica Bass) Clark. Her 19 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren. Mattie Lee cherished her role as a mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great Grandmother. Her legacy lives on through them. She was also deeply loved by her extended family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Her spirit continues to inspire those who carry her memory in their hearts.
