Mary Joice Dunbar Obituary

Mrs. Mary Joice Dunbar was born on December 7, 1951, in Kosciusko, Mississippi, the daughter of William Tucker and Lenora Kern Tucker.   She entered her eternal sleep on Monday, March 18, 2024, at Lexington Medical Center in West Columbia, South Carolina.

Mary Joice moved to Rochester, New York with her family at an early age where she was educated in Rochester, NY public schools. She married Willie James Dunbar on February 24, 1979, in Rochester, NY. In September of that same year, the family moved to Columbia, SC where she resided until her departure.

She attended Midlands Technical College where she received a certification in Psychology. This certification enabled her to secure a job with the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice where she worked for several years.

Mary Joice loved to cook and try new recipes for her family. Each Sunday she would share pictures of what she was having for dinner on social media. Mary Joice also had a love for music, growing her own vegetables, and being a 'Nana”. Mary Joice was a loving wife, a caring mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend. Mary Joice's leaves behind a legacy that taught us how to love and how to fight.

Mary Joice was  preceded in death by her parents,  the late William, and Lenora K. Tucker; and one brother, William 'Dub" Tucker,  Jr.

She is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, Willie James Dunbar of the home; three sons, Anthony Ashford, Kenneth (Jackie) Day, and Willie James (Aisha) Dunbar II, all of Columbia, SC; three stepchildren, Randy (Shirley) Burgess of Martin, SC, Modesty (Craig) Thompson of Fort Mill, SC, and Marlo (Sam) Washington of Huntersville, NC; three sisters, Ruby (Larry) Baker, Pearl Washington, and Vera Thomas, all of Rochester, NY; one brother, Jeff Tucker of Rochester, NY; twelve  (12) loving grandsons; ten (10) loving granddaughters; eight  (8) precious great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other loving relatives, and dear friends, all of whom will dearly miss her.
