The road was getting rough, the hills were hard to climb, God gently closed Mary’s eyes and whispered, “Peace be Thine.” On May 4, 2023, in Lexington, SC at Lexington Extended Care, God stretched His hands and called her home to receive her wings.
Mrs. Mary Magdalene Canzater Washington, the youngest of nine children, was born on July 29, 1936, in Blythewood, SC to the late Henry and Lillie Harrell Canzater.
At an early age she was baptized as a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, Blythewood, SC. During her tenure, she served as vocal leader and member of the Mount Zion Senior Usherboard, V.S. Trapp Jr. Missionary Society, and as head kitchen staffer. She served faithfully until her health declined.
Mary was united in holy matrimony to the late Heyward Washington of Blythewood, South Carolina. To this union two daughters were born. She attended the public schools of Blythewood and graduated from Bethel High School. She retired after 30+ years of employment as a bus driver and cafeteria dietician with Richland County School District Two. Mary’s hobbies included cooking, family gatherings, traveling, making others laugh, and just having fun.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her siblings, James (Son), Pearlee (Sister), Allie Mae (Al), Evelyn (Tina), Elease (Lisa), Catherine (Cat), Dorothy (Dot), Alphonso; and great-grand dog, Vick.
Precious memories will forever be cherished in the hearts of her loving and devoted children, Magdalene (Willie) Moton, Columbia, SC; and DeLoise (Douglas) Samuel, Blythewood, SC; grandchildren, Pasca, Aubrey, Landis, Dwan and D’yanis; great-grands, Shambria, Skylar, Tazon, Dylan, Destyni, Djimon and Kayla; and several loving nieces, nephews, family and friends, all of whom will miss her dearly.
