Mary “Granny” Pondexter Lewis, was born February 25, 1946, in Lone Star, South Carolina, the beloved daughter of the late Deacon Robert and Amanda Fowler Pondexter. On Friday, October 17, 2025, heaven’s garden welcomed another bloom as Mary was called home to be with her loved ones once more.
Mary attended public schools in Calhoun County. She was united in marriage to the late Walter Bee Lewis, and they remained devoted to one another until he went home to be with the Lord.
She worked faithfully at the Midlands Center in Columbia, South Carolina, from which she retired after many years of dedicated service. At an early age she joined New Bethany Baptist Church in Fort Motte, South Carolina.
Mary’s life was filled with light, love, and laughter — qualities she generously shared with everyone she met. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In her quiet moments, she found joy in cooking for her family, watching Lifetime movies — especially her favorite “good doctor” films — and relaxing with word search puzzles.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and cherished siblings, all of whom she loved dearly. The Pondexter siblings are now joyfully reunited in heaven, watching over the family they left behind.
Mary leaves behind a legacy of love and precious memories in the hearts of her loving children, Sylvester Lewis of the home, Rodney (Wanda) Lewis, and Valarie (Donald) Pauling, all of Columbia, SC; and her adoring grandchildren, Amber (John) Morgan, Whitney Lewis, and D’Eric Pauling, all of Columbia, SC; as well as her great-grandchildren, Christian, Hayden, and Anniston Morgan; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and a special friend, Nathaniel Bowman who were blessed by her presence.
