Martha Hampton Thompson was born on September 25, 1935 to the late Sophie Johnson Hampton and Lawyer Hampton. Martha, affectionately known as “Red”, was the 10th of 11 children born to this beautiful couple.
Martha was educated in the public school system of Richland County and was a faithful member of Siloam Baptist Church in which she served at a young age. She later moved her membership to Saint James Baptist Church, where she served devotedly on the Missionary Society, Pulpit Aide, Silver T., and Jubilee Choir.
She was a homemaker until her children were old enough to attend school, then she entered the workforce. She retired from The Marwin Company after 20+ years of dedicated services. Her hobbies included cooking, baking and gardening. Martha was an avid gardener and she loved planting and cultivating her beautiful flowers.
Martha met and married her high school sweetheart Walter Thompson on September 16, 1950. This marriage was blessed with nine beautiful children.
She was preceded in death by: her parents, Sophie and Lawyer Hampton; four children, Curtis Thompson, Rosa Triplin, Walter Thompson Jr., and Marion Thompson. Six sisters, Sophie Deneal, Mary Pressley, Thelma Chapman, Elizabeth Tucker, Nellie Smith, and Louvenia Hampton; five brothers, James Hampton, George Hampton, Lawyer Hampton Jr., John Hampton Sr., and Archie Hampton.
She leaves to cherish precious memories: her devoted husband, Walter Thompson; four daughters, Cheryl Sumter, Deborah (Anthony) Luckey, Loria Reese, and Belinda Robinson; and one son, Anthony Thompson all of Hopkins, South Carolina; Two daughter in laws Lottie Thompson, Gadsden, South Carolina and Annie Thompson, Eastover, South Carolina; one sister, Dorothy Jones, Hopkins, South Carolina; 16 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren. Her life will forever be cherished by the loving memories of a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
