Mamie L. McCoy Obituary

Mamie Lee McCoy was born on September 10, 1939 in Williamston, North Carolina, she departed this world on Saturday, May 29, 2021 at the age of 81. She was born to the late William Stokes and Catherine Moore. Mamie went to her heavenly home with her children at her bedside.

Mamie graduated from West Martin High School in NC in 1957, where she enjoyed playing on the basketball team. In addition, she attended Elizabeth City State College, in NC.

On January 10, 1959, she married John Everett McCoy in New York City. They went on to enjoy a loving, happy marriage of 45 years and the birth of four children.

Mamie had a true love and passion for children and they were drawn to her beautiful heart. She became a director in multiple day care centers and a teacher. She retired from Richland School District 1 in Columbia, SC in 2007.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Everett McCoy, a son, John “Poppie” McCoy; five brothers, William Woolard, Tyrone Stokes, Joseph “June” Outerbridge, Bernard Stokes, Eric Stokes and three sisters, Alice Moore, Cecelia Gorham, Clarice D. Spruill.

Left to cherish Mamie’s memories are her three children; daughter, Dr. Jacqueline (Kenneth) Gadsden, Columbia, SC; two sons, Jerome (Bobbie), Waldorf, MD; Jeffery (Anna), Columbia, SC; three adopted grandchildren, Maurice (Shannon), Columbia, SC; Monica (Quinn), Columbia, SC, Mia (Brandon) Hillian, Columbia, SC; 14 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; two brothers, Robert E. Moore, Queens, NY and Milton Stokes , Washington, NC; 5 sisters, Clara D. Rhore, S. Brunswick, NJ, Ernestine Tillery (Leroy), Ft. Washington, MD; Magaline “Cookie” Terry (Wallace), Clinton, MD; Joanna Pippen (William), Washington, NC; Pamela Crawford, Chocowinity, NC; aunt Eunice Webb, Brooklyn, NY, and a host of loving nieces, nephews, relatives and dear friends, all of whom will miss her dearly.
