Mae Catherine (Lawton) Evans departed this life at Forest Acres Post Acute Nursing Home in Columbia, South Carolina on Wednesday, March 25.2026.
Born on September 16, 1942, in Orangeburg, South Carolina, Mae was the beloved daughter of the late Rosa Washington Lawton and Ezel Lawton, Sr. She is predeceased by her husband Willie Evans, Sr., and her son, Willie Evans, Jr.
Mae attended Norfield High School in Orangeburg, South Carolina. She was employed at Prisma Health Baptist Hospital for over 30 years
Our beloved Mae had an amazing sense of humor and razor-sharp wit. She lit up every room she entered and was a friend to all. She loved to shop and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles.
She attended Saint John Baptist Church, where she was a beloved member of the congregation.
Mae is survived by her daughter, Marilyn Patricia Lawton, her son, Ernest Evans and her daughter-in- law Saundra Tucker; five grandchildren, Sabrina Robinson, Nautica Evans, Kenya Evans, Katrina Gainey, and Hannah Whatley; nine great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
She is predeceased by 7 brothers and 4 sisters.
In her final days, she was surrounded by family and friends at her home and nursing facility.
