Lucious Frierson Sr. Obituary

Lucious Frierson, Sr., a wonderful husband, father, educator and friend was called on March 27, 2019 to the heavenly place of peace and joy.  He was born June 1, 1940 in Bishopville, SC.  He was the son of the late Nora Frierson Scott and Cordell Yates.

Lucious graduated from Dennis High School in Bishopville, SC. He received his Bachelor degree in English and French from South Carolina State University and his Master in Administration from the University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC.

Mr. Frierson worked in Richland County School District One for 50 years. He was a teacher, track coach, dean of students, assistant principal, administrator, and hearing board officer.

Mr. Frierson loved what he did - working and talking with students, as well as visiting parents and guardians when necessary.  He was a “true” educator.  He was a great teacher, administrator and a strict disciplinarian, but always fair.  Not only was he loved and respected, but he was like a father figure to many students - guiding them and trying to keep them on the right track.

Mr. Frierson worked at Fairwold Junior High School, Eau Claire High School, Gibbs Middle School, Alcorn Middle School, Lower Richland High School, and A.C. Flora High School.  When he was a teacher at Fairwold Junior High School he was awarded Teacher of the Year.  He also received other administrative awards and recognitions.

He was a member of Northminster Presbyterian Church where he was an ordained elder, actively involved with the Presbyterian Men, choir member, male ensemble member, and male chorus member.  He received the Presbyterian “Man of the Year 2016” award.  Mr. Frierson also received the CWU Human Rights Award which is given to an individual committed to lifting up the causes of peace, justice, children rights and the rights of persons with special needs. He was also a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

He is survived by his beloved family: his lovely and devoted wife Gretchel Mouzon Frierson of 56 years; sons, Lucious Frierson, Jr (Debbie) and Gregory Antonio Frierson of Columbia SC;  daughter, Gretta Renee Frierson of Greensboro, NC; Stepfather, Ladson Simon of Bishopville, SC; sisters, Edna Wilson, Christine Morgan, Belinda Scott of Bishopville SC; brothers, Ellis Frierson (Lisa) of Melbourne, FL, Robert (Scottie) Scott, Reginald Scott, Johnny (Butch) Scott of Bishopville, SC, Terry Scott of Tucker GA, and William (Shafter) Scott (Vanessa) of Bishopville, SC; Sister in law, Gwendolyn Patterson of Ann Arbor, MI; Brother in laws, William  Leon Johnson of Grayson GA, and Ralph Elliot Johnson of Detroit, MI; daughter-in-law, Princess Nesmith (Roosevelt) of Columbia SC; grandchildren, Kiera Frierson, Shauniece Frierson, Bianca Briscoe, Kalue Frierson, Frankin Wright(Erica) and Amanda Wright; 6 great-grands and a host of nieces and nephews.
