Leroy Sylvester Banks Jr., affectionately known as “John Boy,” peacefully transitioned from this life on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, at 1:47 PM at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital.
Born on September 8, 1974, at Lexington Medical Center in West Columbia, Leroy was the beloved son of Dorthy Smith Webber, his devoted mother and best friend, and the late Leroy Sylvester Banks Sr. He was raised in West Columbia, attended Brooklyn-Cayce High School, and later graduated from Job Corps in Kentucky, where he mastered the trade of brick masonry.
In 2002, Leroy relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, where he built a respected career as a Maintenance Engineer. He worked for many years at International Paper Company, earning certifications in electrical systems, coding, hydraulics, and welding. He later advanced his career, serving as a Thermal Maintenance Supervisor at Ricoh USA.
Leroy was known for his adventurous spirit and love of life. He had a deep passion for the arts—particularly drawing and painting—and was proud to showcase his artwork in local galleries and art shows. His creativity and vibrant personality left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Shariyfa Banks; his devoted mother, Dorthy Smith Webber; and his children: Brittany Shaw (Dorian), Kierra Banks, Krashawn Guess (Mikayla), Justin Banks, and Akai Banks. He was also a father figure to Ahmun Re Leonard, Noy Ferron, and Gyasie Ferron, whom he loved dearly.
Leroy is also survived by his siblings: Thomas Banks (Denise), Sabrina Banks Parker (Elbert), and Kisha Middlebrooks (Johnny); his grandchildren: James McDonald III, A’zyah Moore, Brooklyn Greene, Krashawn Guess Jr., Gracelynn Shaw, and Silas Guess; along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.
Leroy will be remembered as a man who deeply loved his family and embraced life with laughter, joy, and authenticity. His presence, warmth, and light will be missed beyond measure.
