Lawrence Charles Long, Jr. was born February 8, 1945, in Macon, Georgia, the son of the late Lawrence C. Long, Sr. and Betha Clay Brazil He departed this earthly life on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at his residence in Columbia, South Carolina.
Lawrence, affectionately called “Claimjumper”/ “Big Papa” by family and friends, grew up in Eagle Lake and Houston, Texas. He was a graduate of Lockett High School where he was a member of the football team. After graduating high school he served in the United States Army from which he retired in 2007, after twenty years and five days of dedicated and faithful service. During his tenure in the Army he served two tours of duty in Vietnam where he served in the infantry as a Paratrooper, and a part of the Military Police; and was the recipient of many awards and commendations to include The Bronze Star. After retirement he went to work as a truck driver for the JB Hunt Company.
Lawrence attended Agape Worship Center International.
During his spare time, he enjoyed cooking the best Bar-B-Q ribs ever! He was a loving, kind, and compassionate, man who would help anyone who was in need. His favorite past time was watching his favorite teams, the Dallas Cowboys and the LA Lakers. He also enjoyed music, traveling (he flew somewhere different every month), listening to reggae and blues music; and he enjoyed fishing even though he never caught anything.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brothers, Albert Ray “Butch,” and Edward Charles Brazil; sisters, Shirley Heard, Charles Etta Brazil; and grandnephew, Donovan Horne.
He is lovingly survived by his devoted wife, Camille “Baby Wife” Long; best friend, Judith Enriquez; daughters, Quianna (Marcus) Long-Moore, Clarine Arzu, Shay’ana (Heather) Long, and Adriane (Russel) Icenhour; son, Lawrence “Ken” Long; grandchildren, Major, Mia & Mason Moore, Kaitalyna, Alandria, Landrew, Mia, and Olivia; brother, Robert (Pamela) Collins; sisters, Billie Joe (Ruth) Long, Daisy (Robert) Taylor, and Erma Horne; friends, Felicia Grate, Kelly Green, Felice Miranda, Alex Brown; mother-in-law, Clarine Augustine; father-in-law, Cruz Martinez; a host of nephews, nieces; and other loving relatives and dear friends, all of whom will dearly miss him.
