Joel Albert Bowers was born September 21, 1955, in Columbia, South Carolina, the beloved son of Ethel (Bowers) Brown and Esco Harmon. He departed this earthly life on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at Prisma Health Richland Medical Center in Columbia, South Carolina, at the age of 69.
Joel received his early education at Fairwold Elementary and later graduated from Spring Valley High School, Class of 1973. His dedication to service led him to enlist in the United States Army, where he served honorably for twelve years, including time overseas. Following his military career, Joel worked as a Government Business Office Clerk for the City of Columbia.
Family was at the center of Joel's life. He was a dedicated son and father. He loved spending time with his grandson, Carter, bringing joy and laughter to their moments together. Joel enjoyed traveling and life's simple pleasures including nights at The Comedy House or cheering for his favorite teams-the Seattle Supersonics and Cleveland Cavaliers-or reading his favorite book, Roots: The Novel. A man of great character, Joel was known for his fun-loving and caring nature, sharp wit, and down-to-earth personality. He had a dry sense of humor that could brighten any room, and he never met a stranger. A lover of fashion, he took great pride in his appearance, always dressed in style and class. He will be missed by all those who loved and knew him.
Joel was preceded in death by his stepfather, Thomas Brown.
