James William "Jip" Jones Sr. was born December 29, 1946, in Gloucester, Virginia, the beloved son of the late Elisha Spencer and Queen Ester Jones. He passed away peacefully on Friday, April 10, 2026, in Newberry, South Carolina.
James Iived a life mark by courage strength and unwavering character. He proudly served his country in the United States Army achieving the rank of Private First Class (PFC) which began on July 14, 1968 and concluded June 19, 1969. During his time in the military, he demonstrated exceptional bravery and dedication, earning a Purple Heart, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. His sacrifice and commitment to his country always gave him great honor and gratitude during his service and always held a special place in his heart.
To family and friends, he was loving known as “Jip” a man who was funny, hardworking, strong and direct. He spoke his mind with honesty and lived his life with purpose. He often reminded those around him, especially his son, that you don’t have friends, you only have associates," a reflection of his wisdom and life experience, that he so lovingly shared.
Jip had a deep love for southern soul Blues music and found joy in simple pleasures, especially his favorite dish catfish strew.
In addition to his parents, James was also preceded in death by his sister, Virginia Barber; and brother, Roy Jones.
Above all, James was a devoted father to his son, James Jones, Jr. who carries forward is legacy of strength and resilience. He is also survived by his brothers, Enos Jones and Frank Jones; sisters, Geraldine Tillage and Rose Lee Jackson; uncle, John Harris; aunt, Mary Foster; and a host of nieces, nephews; and other loving relatives and dear friends, all of whom will cherish his memory.
James “Jip” Jones will be remembered as a great man who was respected.
