Brother James H. Carter was born on August 4, 1947, the beloved son of the late Fred Carter and Blanche S. Murray. He was affectionately known as "Jap''. He departed this earthly life on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at Prisma Health Baptist Hospital in Columbia, South Carolina. He was 77 years old.
Jap was truly a jack of all trades. Known for his mechanical skills, he had a remarkable ability to take things apart and put them back together, often better than they were before. His love for bicycles was unmatched, and he was likely the first man in the neighborhood to have audio equipment installed on his bike, turning heads and inspiring smiles wherever he went.
Jap was a man who touched many lives with his generous spirit and unforgettable personality. He was deeply loved and will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Elliott Clay Richardson, Eddie Carter, Sam Lee Richardson, and Fred Carter; and sister, Bessie Carter.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his sister Shelia Richardson of Columbia, SC; sister-in-law, Jessie Mae Carter of Columbia, SC; and beloved aunt Annie Bell Thomas, of Columbia, SC. He also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews who adored him, Charlett Mickens, Detrese Carter, Lynn Gleaton, Lavonda Carter, Carolyn Watkins, Eula Walker-Brown, Tonya Richardson-Shuler, Felicia Moore, and Carol Brantley, all of Columbia, SC; as well as Orlando Reeves, Walter (Edona) Williams, Wayne (Ethel) Gleaton, Ronald Richardson, of Columbia, SC; and Elliott Kent Richardson of Cleveland, Ohio.
Jap is also survived by a host of other loving relatives and dear friends who will remember him fondly and miss him deeply.
