James Eddie Kelly was born on November 5, 1929, in Union County, South Carolina, to the late Arthur Kelly and Marie Sims-Kelly. A man of quiet strength and enduring love, he peacefully departed this life on June 10, 2025, in Columbia, South Carolina.
James was a lifelong believer and faithful member of Zion Pilgrim Baptist Church, where he found spiritual strength and community. His work ethic was evident in his many years of dedicated service at Kline Iron and Steel, where he was employed for over 15 years. Beyond the workplace, he was well known for his passion for cooking—especially his famous barbecue—which he loved sharing with others, turning every gathering into a celebration.
Mr. Kelly was the true embodiment of devotion. A loving and committed husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great great, great -grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, his life was a shining example of grace, humility, and love in action. His presence lit up every room, and his wisdom anchored generations.
He was preceded in death by his beloved daughters, Janie Mae Kelly and Mattie K. Williams; his parents, Arthur and Marie Sims-Kelly; and his cherished siblings: Andrew “Nan” Kelly, Leroy “Head” Kelly, Arthur “Jive” Kelly, Lewis “Luke” Kelly, Belton “Belt” Kelly, Lester Kelly, Mary “Mae” Frances Bowden, and Marie “Dot” Taylor.
He leaves behind his devoted and loving wife, Mrs. Cornelia Williams Kelly, who stood faithfully by his side through life’s many seasons. He is also survived by his son, James F. Kelly; daughters, Annie (Harold) Lyles, Carolyn M. Boyd, Virginia (Clarence) Lyles, and Janice M. Brown, all of Jenkinsville, SC; and Mary Ellen Scarborough of Columbia, SC. His loving sister, Viola K. Brown, continues to honor his legacy, along with his sisters-in-law, Julia A. Kelly, Maxine B. Kelly, Thelma B. Kelley, Carrie W. Culbreath, and Cora W. Key.
James also leaves behind a special son, Roger Brasley, who held a unique place in his heart. His legacy lives on through a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and even great-great-great-grandchildren—each touched by his kindness, stories, and steadfast love. He is also remembered fondly by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and an extensive circle of cherished friends and community members.
Mr. James Eddie Kelly’s life was a testament to the beauty of humility, the power of love, and the joy of service. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit and memory will live on in all those who had the blessing of knowing him.
