James Edward Mackey was born on October 27, 1947, in Due West, South Carolina, the beloved son of the late Maeolar Scurry and Joseph Mackey. He passed away on Thursday, October 30, 2025, at McCormick Post -Acute in McCormick, South Carolina.
A graduate of Mims High School, James worked in the textile and truck logging industries. He had a passion for fishing, hunting, and gardening. Mr. Mackey was an active member of Lower Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, where he attended faithfully and regularly before his health declined.
In addition to his parents, James was also preceded in death by his son, Kelvin Roper; two sisters, JoAnn Cunningham, and Mamie Gilchrist; and a brother, Howard Mackey.
He is survived by his estranged wife, Shirley Mackey; two daughters, Cassandra Mackey and Antoninette Mackey; and two sons, Ronnie Mackey and Carlos Mackey, all of South Carolina; eight grandchildren, six great -grandchildren, three sisters, Isabel Powell and Edna Landrum, both of Boston, MA, and Dorothy Adams of McCormick, SC; along with four step -sisters, three step -brothers; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other loving relatives, and dear friends, all of whom will cherish his memory.
