Irene Hatten Powell

Irene Hatten Powell was born January 9, 1943, in Columbia, South Carolina, the beloved daughter of the late Robert and Elizabeth (Johnson) Hatten. She peacefully departed this life on Tuesday, August 29, 2023, in Columbia, South Carolina.

Irene was educated in the public schools of Richland County and was employed at Ross Floral Shop for many years. She then went on to work for the State of South Carolina Custodial Department from which she retired after many years of dedicated service.

She was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Moses Powell.

Mrs. Powell was a member of Faith Tabernacle Church of Columbia.

Irene loved helping others and would do so whenever there was an opportunity; she also enjoyed knitting, fishing, and oh how she had a green thumb that could grow anything. Irene had a smile that would light up any room. She will truly be missed by all those who loved and knew her.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Irene was preceded in death by her sons, Willie Robert (Rick) Hatten and Moses Powell, Jr.

Those who will forever cherish fond and precious memories of Irene are her first cousin, Clara Bell of Columbia, South Carolina; Patricia Wolf and Family, Shantell Nelson, Valencia Foster, Tanecia Holloway, James Watkins, and Rachel Alston Hayes, all of Columbia, South Carolina; and granddaughter, Tawana Ashford, all of whom will miss her dearly.
