Gerald Mitchell Obituary

Gerald Scott Mitchell, Sr. aka “Jerry”, aka “Jap”, was born at home on February 19, 1948, to William Morris Mitchell and Mary Madeline Scott Mitchell. He was taken to the hospital the next day on February 20, 1948, which is his official and legal birthday. This year we were fortunate to be able to celebrate his last two birthdays with him. He was 76 years old.

Our father was a decorated soldier in the United States Army where he fought for his country and was a proud Vietnam Veteran. He was a talented singer and loved to sing with his brothers and with some of his coworkers where he worked at the post office. Some of his favorite groups were The Delphonics, The Sylistics, The Commodores and The Chi-Lites. Growing up with Daddy meant that there was always singing and dancing in the house. He lit up a room everywhere he went and had a way of making us laugh at any given and unexpected moment with his crazy sense of humor.

Our father loved his family, and we all loved him in return. Like my brother Jerry Jr. always says, “He was a family man.” It was nothing for him to jump in his SUV (that he treasured and took good care of for many years) and burn up the highways and byways to see his family in New York and Virginia.

He is survived by his seven children, Angela Mitchell Chatman, Shan-tai Mitchell, Tasha (David) Cumbas, Gerald Scott Mitchell,  Jr., Jeremiah Scott Mitchell, Jerald Lee Mitchell, and Jared Will Mitchell; his brothers, Willie Mitchell, and Sidney Mitchell; grandchildren, cousins, nieces, and nephews; and his beloved aunt, Marion Mitchell Greene, whom he loved dearly.

He joins his mother and father, his siblings, Uncle Gene, Uncle Bobby, Uncle Paris, Uncle Gaylord, Uncle Otto, and Aunt Tasha. He also joins our dear sister, Cassandra Christine Mitchell. May they all continue to rest in peace. Although we mourn his passing, we take comfort in knowing that he is no longer suffering and that he has joined those that preceded him in death, and I am sure they welcomed him with loving arms wide open. We take comfort in the memories we have and the love that we shared.
