Georgia Mae Johnson was born on July 4, 1935, in Columbia, South Carolina. She is the eldest child of the late Susie Johnson Peterson. She helped raise her seven siblings and was the primary caregiver for her Aunt Dessie, who lived to be in her eighties; and for her grandmother, Ms. Emma Johnson, who lived to be 119 years old. Once her health declined, Ms. Georgia became a patient at Midtown Dialysis Clinic where she was a member of a social club and planned monthly activities. She will be remembered for saying that once she made it to 80 years old, she was blessed to have lived a full life. Ms. Georgia passed away on June 5, 2022, four weeks before her 87th birthday.
Ms. Georgia worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant. She was awarded Employee of the Year before she retired from C.M. Tucker Center in 2000. After she retired, she enjoyed cooking, doing jigsaw puzzles, watching television, and spending time with her friends and family. She was well known for her famous potato salad and made sure she prepared it for all family gatherings, including her birthday celebrations.
Ms. Georgia was also preceded in death by her only child, Michael James Johnson, Sr.; and six of her seven siblings.
Those who will forever cherish fond and precious memories of Ms. Georgia are her brother, Melton Peterson (Big Pete); her grandchildren, Anita, Alisha, Michael, Somoan, Johnathan, Bobby, and Joslin; 16 great grandchildren; and 6 great-great grandchildren; a host of loving nephews and nieces, including her niece, Turquoise, who was always just a phone call away if she needed anything. Georgia will be missed by all those who loved and knew her.
