Deacon Frank E. Burkett, Sr. was born April 14, 1933, in Columbia, SC, the beloved son of the late Moses and Magnolia Monts Burkett. He ascended into heaven to be with God on Monday, August 25, 2025, at PRISMA Health Baptist Parkridge, in Irmo, SC.
Affectionately known as “Slim” by family and friends, Frank married Betty J. Martin on June 20, 1959, and their union was blessed with 66 years together and the births of nine (9) children.
He didn’t have much education because he had to work at an early age to help support his family. He worked at City School for two years and then was employed by Ideal Plumbing and Shular’s Plumbing. He also worked as a concrete assistant with Johnny Burkett, his brother. He later started his own business, “Frank Burkett’s Concrete Company.” After retirement, he continued to help his family and community in any way he could.
Frank accepted Christ as his personal Savior in 1961. He was a faithful and devoted member of Greater St. James FBH Church where he served as a Deacon and later as Chairman of the Deacon Board for more than 55 years. He loved to play the “rub board,” sing, shout, and was always telling everyone how “Good God Is.” He served God faithfully!
Though he is no longer physically with us, he will be remembered as a shining light in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In addition to his parents, Frank was also preceded in death by his son, Thomas Burkett; daughters, Ivy, Brenda, and Marilyn Burkett; seven brothers; and four sisters.
Those left to cherish his precious memories are his loving wife, Betty M. Burkett; son, Frank (Vanessa) Burkett, Jr. of Irmo, SC; daughters, Sherron (Henry) Edwards of Phoenix City, AL; Miriam Burkett, Veronica (Edward) Mayers, and Christle (Lewis) Jacobs, all of Irmo, SC; twenty-three (23) grandchildren; and forty-four (44) great-grandchildren; his loving sister, Ruby Thompson of Irmo, SC; a host of loving nephews, nieces and other loving relatives and dear friends, all of whom will dearly miss him.
