Frances Fields Obituary

 

Frances Carpenter Fields went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, June 16, 2019.  Affectionately known as “Fran,” she was born August 15, 1931 in Gaffney, South Carolina.  Fran was the youngest daughter of the late John and Teacora Carpenter. 

After graduating from Granard High School, Fran completed her Bachelor of Arts degree at Barber-Scotia College, in Concord, North Carolina and earned her Master of Arts degree from the University of South Carolina.  She served as a teacher in Richland County School District One for 33 years.  During her tenure teaching, she earned several citations, awards and recognitions.  She was professionally affiliated with The National Education Association of South Carolina, South Carolina Education Association, Richland County Education Association, and the Retired Teachers Association. 

As a devoted and active member of Zion Baptist Church, Fran served as president of the Missionary Society, was a member of The Faithful Workers’ Circle, the Waverly Wide Awake Club, the Enrichment Committee, and she served as a teacher for Vacation Bible School.

Fran served as a board member of Church Women United, and served as the association’s Ecumenical Development Coordinator.  She also was a member in the Women’s Educational and Missionary Convention of South Carolina and the Gethsemane Women’s Auxiliary where she served as President and also served on the education committee.

She was a member of Gamma Nu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., where she served on the housing board of directors and several other committees.

Fran was also a member of the Cosmopolitan Club and worked frequently in the community on fundraising drives for the March of Dimes, the Heart Fund, and the American Cancer Society.  Fran loved traveling, helping others, and decorating.

In addition to her parents, Fran is predeceased by her husband, Lieutenant Colonel Richard L. Fields and her daughter Angela Luck Holloway.

She is survived by her daughter, Danyelle Luck Young, five grandchildren, Quincy Alford, Alicia Holloway Smith, Joshua Luck, Matthew Young and Meghan Young; nine great-grandchildren; brother, Dr. Carl A. Carpenter; longtime companion James Bassard; and, a host of other loving relatives and friends.
