Eula Mae Koon was born August 25, 1929, in Columbia, South Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Viola S. Haymon and Leslie Haymon Sr. She departed this life on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at home surrounded by loved ones.
Eula Mae was the matriarch of her family. She devoted her life to raising her children and cherishing her role as a grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a source of encouragement, a keeper of traditions, and a storyteller whose lessons will live on in the hearts of those she leaves behind. She was known in her community for her flowers, Christmas decor and entrepreneurial spirit, from selling candy to neighborhood children to making and sharing spirits with friends. Her home was always a place where people gathered, laughed, and felt cared for.
Mrs. Koon was a long-time member of Zion Pilgrim Baptist Church where she attended faithfully until her health declined.
Though we mourn her passing, we rejoice in the incredible 96 years she shared with us. She will be remembered always for her gentle spirit and the love she poured into our lives
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert C. Koon; and children, Rosalind K. Johnson and Robert N. Haymon.
Her legacy of love, faith, and community will continue through family. She is lovingly survived by her daughter, Carlo M. Yarborough; her sister, Martha Ray; grandchildren, Michael (Dina) Johnson, Robert (Amber) Johnson, Hiluv (Robin) Johnson, all of Columbia SC, Willie Moody of Charlotte, NC; Tammy (Calvin) Myers, and Jasmine Washington, of Columbia SC; a host of great-grandchildren; and other loving relatives and dear friends, all of whom will dearly miss her.
