Mrs. Ethel Webber Lovett was born on February 12, 1924, in Eastover, South Carolina, the daughter of the late Edward Reed Webber and Ethel Johnson Webber. She went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 20, 2025, at the remarkable age of 101, and having received recognition from Congressman Jim Clyburn and former President Joe Biden in 2024, having attained centenarian status.
Ethel was united in matrimony to the late Herbert Lovett. She was educated in the public schools of Richland County, South Carolina. Ethel worked for several years as an attendant at the laundromat in Gadsden, SC, before dedicating her later years to being a caregiver—positively impacting the lives of many in her community.
Mrs. Lovett accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior early in life. A devoted member of Red Hill Baptist Church, she was active in the Missionary Ministry and the Senior Ministry until she was no longer able to physically participate.
Ethel’s steadfast faith was the cornerstone of her life. She was admired for her meek, quiet spirit, and genuine care for family, friends, neighbors, and all she encountered. Her enduring legacy is reflected in the generations she nurtured and the community she served with grace and humility.
Her quiet resilience offered strength to those around her. Throughout her life, she exemplified kindness, generosity, and unwavering love. Even well into her nineties, Ethel was a hard worker and remained active by sewing, gardening, and chopping her own wood for a wood-burning stove. Her presence enriched those who knew her, and her memory will be cherished for generations.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband; ten brothers, Henry Webber, Eddie Webber, Bert Johnson, Essex (Pauline) Webber, Samuel (Lula) Webber, Vincent (Sarah) Webber Sr., Stanley (Theresa) Webber, Ulysses (Rosa) Webber Sr., Chappell (Mae Frances) Webber, Earl Webber; two sisters, Blanche (Marvin) Webber Barker and Eloise Webber (Robert) Hamilton; and two grandchildren, Ronald Webber and Gwen Webber (Eugene) Speed.
Mrs. Lovett leaves to treasure her memory her son, William (Kay) Webber, Sr.; and her nephew whom she helped raise, Herbert (Delphine) McMillian; sisters-in-law, Lula Webber of Columbia, SC, and Mae Frances Webber of Gadsden, SC; nine grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, twenty-eight great-great-grandchildren; along with many nieces, nephews, other loving relatives, and dear friends who will remember her with deep affection.
