The journey of Emma W. Spigner began on August 1, 1947, in Columbia, SC, the daughter of the late Lillie P. Wood. Her journey peacefully ended at PRISMA Heart Hospital on Thursday, January 22, 2026.
Emma graduated from C. A. Johnson High School and attended Midlands Technical School, Benedict College (CDA certificate), Columbia College, and Bryant & Stratton (pursuing AA in ECE). She retired after 28 years of service from the State of South Carolina’s Department of Mental Health C. M. Tucker Center. Additionally, she served as Co-Director of Woods Wonderland Daycare, Kidz Zone Learning Center, and she was a Mary Kay Consultant.
Emma was very involved in her children and grandchildren’s lives. She enjoyed good food, reading, crafting, learning, and spending time with family and friends. It’s with love and honor that we celebrate the life of our beautiful mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend.
Emma was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-one years, Andrew L. Spigner, Sr; mother, Lilla P. Wood; two sisters, Wilhelmina Taylor and Lillian Daniels; and two brothers, Roosevelt Wood, Sr. and Grover Wood, Sr.
Emma leaves to cherish her loving memory three daughters, Sheila Spigner, Veronica Spigner-James, and Melissa Spigner; one son, Andrew L. Spigner, Jr.; one son-in-law, Omar James, Sr.; six grandchildren, Tamiya Blanding, Kamari Spigner-James, Trohvoris Blanding, Jr., Zariah James, Tre’Von Blanding, and Omar James, Jr.; three great-grandchildren, Travis, Taylor, and Tyler Blanding; two sisters-in-law, Catherine Spigner and Sallie Wood; three best friends, Bessie Gillard, Sonya Moody, and Estelle Randolph; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving relatives and dear friends, all of whom will dearly miss her.
