Emanuel Weeks, affectionately known as Sunman, was born January 10, 1936 in State Park SC. He was the son of the late John and Pauline Weeks. He was one of 11 siblings and was preceded in death by four brothers; Matthew Weeks, Odell Weeks, James Weeks, and Malachi Weeks; and one sister Couzet Weeks.
Emanuel received his early formal education from the Richland County Public School System, Anna Boyd School and C.A. Johnson High School. He enlisted in the United States Army, and after a tour of duty, Emanuel attended Allen University to study Business Administration. He then joined the United States Air Force. After completing his service, he spent a brief period in Cleveland OH working in construction. He returned to South Carolina where he met his sweetheart, Dorothy Hampton. They were married in June 1958 until her death in 1975. From this union, four children were born.
Emanuel was employed as an insurance writer for North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company for several years until becoming employed as a soil conservationist by the Soil Conservation Service of the US Department of Agriculture, where he worked until his retirement. He loved spending time with family and planning and participating in the family’s annual July 4th celebration. He was an avid fisher and enjoyed hunting.
He is survived by his children Juretta (Leon) Scott of Columbia SC, Jerome Weeks of Atlanta GA, Darren Bernard Weeks of Columbia SC, and Sheila Weeks-Brown of Burlington NJ; four grandchildren Renaldo Scott and Christopher Scott of Columbia SC, Sean Brown and Alexander Brown of Burlington NJ; two brothers, MacArthur (Cassandra) Weeks of Columbia SC, Richard (Rose) Weeks of Horn Lake MS; three sisters, Johnnie Mae Jones of Cleveland OH, Mary Paige of Columbia SC, and Martha Kelly of Columbia SC; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends, all of whom will miss him dearly.
