Earl S. Bynum Obituary

Earl S. Bynum was born on July 11, 1951, in Camden, South Carolina, the beloved son of the late Willie “Bubba” Lee and Mattie “Redd” Lee. He was raised in Camden and peacefully departed this life on Monday, March 9, 2026.

Earl attended Kershaw County schools and graduated from Jackson High School in 1969. After high school, he continued his education at South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, South Carolina.

At an early age, Earl developed a love for baseball and proudly played for Camden’s well-known team, the Camden Royals.

In 1969, Earl began his career at DuPont, where he faithfully worked for 30 years. After retiring, he continued serving his community by joining the courier team at Palmetto GBA. Later, he had the opportunity to work with the Kershaw County Recreation Department, where he truly enjoyed staying active in the community. Earl was a dedicated worker who took pride in every role he held.

On September 7, 1985, Earl married the love of his life, Bertha Knight. Together they shared forty wonderful years of marriage. Earl and Bertha were not only husband and wife, but the best of friends. They did everything together—even riding to work side by side. From their union, they raised two beautiful children, Julie Shelia and Charles Neil. Earl instilled in Julie and Neil the importance of commitment to God, love, wisdom, respect, and the values needed to navigate life.

Earl was a proud and loving grandfather. He cherished his grandchildren—Zachary, Chasity, Zarrius, Jaylen, Kayla, Chase, and Aubree—and he enjoyed traveling with them, family cookouts, and Sunday dinners spent together. Family meant everything to Earl.

He was also one of the biggest fans of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Whenever the Steelers were playing, there was no moving Earl from his living room television. He remained a loyal and faithful fan through every season.

Earl was preceded in death by his parents, Willie “Bubba” Lee and Mattie “Redd” Bynum Lee; his brother, Charles Lee; and his nephew, Charles Jones; brother-in-law, Joshua Knight, Jr.

He leaves to cherish his loving memory his devoted wife, Bertha Knight Bynum; children, Julie (Jamie) Gilchrist, Charles (Charlonda) Thomas, Rev. Wynee (Rev. Darrell) Edwards, Audra (Len) Jackson; Marcella Salmond and Jauckline Harrell Gates; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Willie (Jackie) Lee and Randy (Mary) Jones; three sisters, Deborah Jones, Linda Lee, and Doris (Charles) Perry; special nephews, Dee Dee Lee, Rahmann Lee, and Mario Lee; a special niece, Shawnta Newman; one uncle, Paul Jones; aunts, Edith Coleman and Louise Lewis; brothers-in-law, Curtis (Drucilla) Knight, and Carlos (Kateri) Knight; sisters-in-law, Almeta Knight, Jacqueline (Herbert) Love, Senthia R. Knight, Sandra Reddick, and PerLinda (Leroy) Hudson; and a host of other loving relatives and friends who will miss him dearly.
