Dorothy Hawkins Obituary

Dorothy Lee Lane Hawkins was born on February 17, 1936. She was the daughter of the late Harvey and Mary Lane of Colerain, North Carolina.

After the loss of her father at age three, she was continually nurtured by her mother and her aunt, the late Goldie Deberry. Upon moving to New York City at the age of fifteen, she attended and graduated from George Washington High School in 1953. Thereafter, Dorothy attended Hunter College of the City University of New York and graduated with a Bachelor's of Arts in English. Later on, she attended Queens College of C.U.N.Y and earned a Master's degree in English. She became a teacher and taught English to middle school, high school and college students.

While pursuing her studies, she was a member of the Union Baptist Church in Harlem, NY. It was here that she met and married Robert E. Hawkins, Jr.  To this union, they had a daughter, Robyn.

Dorothy persevered as a single parent. She was adventurous and had an independent spirit. She loved music, playing the piano and singing.  Dorothy accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Savior in 1978. She could always be noted praying, fasting, evangelizing, reading the Bible and singing praises to the Lord. She believed in God for everything and never worried for anything, trusting only in Him.

In 1991, Dorothy had the opportunity to travel to Jerusalem, Israel. She lived there for almost four years. She traveled throughout Israel, her faith growing and increasing with each blessed encounter with both Christian and Jewish people.

Upon returning to the states, her Christian growth was quite evident. She witnessed about the Lord and was extremely concerned for everyone's salvation. Buoyed by strong faith and wisdom, Dorothy bestowed love and guidance for Robyn, her grandchildren and god-kids.

Dorothy leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Robyn Pamela Bass (Leon); grandsons, Matthew Bryan Kennedy and Marc Daniel Kennedy(Sarah); granddaughter, Matyah Nandi Nasir; great- granddaughter, Liyah Bryana Kennedy; great-grandson, Phoenix Colby Kennedy; godsons, Lawrence Wayne Moore and Gary Moore; goddaughter, Monique Belton; her
dearest friend, Doreen Hall and a host of cousins and friends.
