Dontrece “Jerod” Wilson was born to William Wilson and Cathy Martin on Saturday, September 30, 1978, in Columbia, SC, at Richland Memorial Hospital. At 7 lbs., 9 oz., God introduced Jerod to the world! The Lord gave us 46 years with Jerod and called him home on Sunday, August 3, 2025.
As a child, Jerod attended several schools in the Columbia area as his family moved around when better opportunities presented themselves. As an adult, he was experienced in multiple professions; however, he spent 8 years at Peninsula Slate as an installer and over 10 years as a security officer at the Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ).
Jerod loved taking any opportunity to spend time at Myrtle Beach, no matter hot or cold. There was something about the relaxing sound of the waves, the coastal breeze cascading across his face, and taking a moment to disconnect for just a little while that brought him peace. He also became a master at Words with Friends, devouring friends and family with little mercy. He and his mother (Cathy) would sometimes stay up until 1 o’clock in the morning going toe to toe. These are the moments you remember for a lifetime!
Jerod loved his family—his parents, whom God blessed to bring him into this world; his siblings and extended family, who shared so many fond memories with him; his beautiful daughters; and the love of his life, Jameka.
Fifteen years ago, while working at DJJ, Jerod eyed a young intern focused on finishing her master’s degree studies. After convincing her to focus her studies in the section where he worked, the building blocks started coming together for a developing love story. On June 4, 2016, Jerod married Jameka Hemming, bringing their union to life before God. They went on to have two daughters.
Jerod’s rock was God. He depended on Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior! He began his walk with God as a youth at Union Baptist Church, continued his discipleship at Living Waters Christian Center as an adult, and finally arrived at his last destination—to be present with the Lord.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Jameka Hemming-Wilson; his daughters, Dabria Coleman-Wilson, Destiny Wilson, Bailey Wilson, and Rhiley Wilson; and his stepson, Harold Hemming IV. Jerod deeply loved his children, and his greatest hope was that they would always take care of one another as he cared for them.
He also leaves behind his mother, Cathy Martin of Columbia, SC; his father, William Wilson (Teresa) of Greenville, SC; his grandmother, Janie Martin of Columbia, SC; and his siblings, Antwain (Karen) Peterson, Nicole Green, Tamara Simpson, and Antwan Wilson. He also leaves behind his uncles, Jimmy Martin, Willie (Schenelle) Martin, and Tommy Martin; and his aunts, Tammy (Sidney) Martin-Bowman, Niece Emmerson, Carol Wilson, and Connie Wilson.
He is also lovingly remembered by his parents-in-law, Harold (Aline) Hemming II; his grandparents-in-law, Harold Hemming I and Loretta Hemming, and Elliott Richardson Sr.; his brothers-in-law, Andre (Candice) Marks, Harold Hemming III, Lloyd Hemming I, Major Turner, and Terrance (Trisha) Leggon; his sister-in-law, April Barnett; his godmother-in-law, Wanda Lykes; and he is also remembered by his uncles- and aunts-in-law, Elliott (Betty) Richardson Jr., Kevin (Donna) Smallwood, and Leonard (Melissa) Nesmith.
In addition, he leaves behind a host of more uncles, aunts, cousins, extended family members, and cherished friends who will forever hold his memory in their hearts.
With God’s love, grace, and mercy, join us as we remember the life, love, and legacy of Mr. Dontrece Jerod Wilson—a child of God, husband, dad, son, grandson, brother, nephew, and friend.
