Derrick Lamont Hayes, Sr., was born March 23, 1969, at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. He was the youngest of three children born to Eugene W. Hayes, Sr., and Naomi Finch Hayes.
The family relocated to Columbia, South Carolina, where Derrick grew up and was educated in the Richland County school district. Always an inquisitive student, in 1987 he graduated from Eau Claire High School. He entered the work force after graduation where he was employed as a machine operator. Derrick was a jack of all trades who loved to work and could fix nearly anything - from cars to appliances.
Derrick married the love of his life, the former Sonia Washington, and to this union their son, Derrick Lamont Hayes, Jr., was born. Derrick loved being a husband and father and relished the time spent with his family.
He was a lifelong Pittsburgh Steelers fan and made sure all knew his black and gold team was to be respected, win or lose. He had a heart filled with love for everyone, especially his family. Derrick never met a stranger and was always the life of the party, ensuring there was never a dull moment. He loved to travel and shared his excitement about the places he visited.
Derrick was a member of the St. Phillip AME Church where he was a part of the Evangelistic Ministry.
Derrick was preceded in death by his wife and his father. He leaves to cherish his wonderful memories his: mother, Naomi Finch Hayes; son, Derrick (Miquela) Hayes, Jr.; brothers, Eugene (Vanessa) Hayes, Jr., Brenton (Anatasha) Hayes; sister, Stacey Hayes; stepmother, LaBlonde (Willie Dee) Harmon; stepsister, Twana Hardy; stepbrothers, Derron (Stacey) Hardy, Andreas (Angela) Hardy; four nephews, four nieces, two great-nephews, one great-niece; uncles, aunts, and a host of cousins, other relatives, and friends.
