Delazando T. Rawls Obituary

Delazando “Dela” Terrel Rawls entered into eternal rest on Monday, October 20, 2025, at PRISMA Health Richland Hospital. On November 12, 1972, in Columbia South Carolina, God blessed George and Beatty Rawls with a son. They named their precious blessing Delazandro Terrel Rawls.

Dela, as he was affectionately called by family and friends, was educated in Public Schools of Richland County School District Two, where he was a proud graduate of Richland Northeast High School. He continued his education at Midlands Technical College to become a physical therapist.

However, Dela decided to take a different path and pursued a career with South Carolina Department of Corrections where he was employed over 31 years, until God decided to give him rest from his journey. His career with the SC Department of Corrections began August 22, 1994. He began his career as a Correction Officer at Wateree Correctional Institution. He later transferred to Manning Correctional Institution, where he joined the Sitcon Team and fell in love with the mission. He later promoted to Colonel with the Situation Control (SITCON) Special Team of the Division of Security. With his vast knowledge of corrections, Dela mentored countless correction officers. Under his leadership, his SITCON group became the best negotiating team. Dela always encouraged members of his team to be the best they could be. He believed in doing his job as if he were doing it for God. He viewed his career as a correction officer as his calling; his God given talent. He was dedicated to everything he did, work or pleasure.

He was an avid Dallas Cowboys’ fan. He especially loved spending time with family and friends, fishing, riding motorcycles, and playing spades. He really loved joking around and spending time with his family.

Dela was joined in holy matrimony to the former Carol Scott, and to this union of love, they were blessed with the birth of a handsome son, Delazandro Rawls, Jr. (DJ).

Dela was a devoted and loving husband, father, brother, son-in-law, brother-in-law, godfather, uncle, cousin, and friend. To know Dela was to love Dela!

He was preceded in death by his loving parents, George Evans & Beatty Jean Rawls; and his grandparents, Lee and Minnie Mayes, George Rawls, and Rosa Lee Miller.

Dela leaves to cherish his  memories his loving wife, Carol Scott-Rawls; loving son, Delazandro (DJ) Rawls, Jr.; loving mother-in-law, Annie M. Scott, caring brothers, George E. Rawls, Jr., Larry J. Rawls, Clifford Rawls, Gregory Rawls; brother-in-law, Bobby P. Scott; special cousin, Tina Smith; goddaughters, Minneka Green and Kiana Green; nieces, nephews, and a host of other loving relatives and friends, all of whom will dearly miss him.

“To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.”  2 Corinthians 5:8
