Deacon Lewis Ross was born May 14, 1934, in Barnwell, South Carolina, the son of the late Ms. Donie Bell Ross and Mr. Melvin Williams. He was called home to be with the Lord at the age of 88 on Saturday, November 19, 2022, at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
Lewis was education began in the county school system, but was completed in 1972 thru the Wilmington, Delaware night school system while providing for his family of two sons. He became the family sanctuary to the North as one of the oldest of thirteen siblings. He worked as a Machinist and in Management for Container Corporation of America until his retirement in 1995 in the city of brotherly love Philadelphia, PA. After relocating to South Carolina where he worked and retired from Sears and Walmart corporations for an additional twenty years of service to the economic workforce. Outside of work, he was a bass guitar musician for the Lord.
Lewis Ross was a proud Christian man who gave his life and soul to his faith. An esteemed Deacon and member of Greater St. Luke Baptist Church of Columbia, SC, supporting the community in guidance as a mentor to the youth. He not only lived a spiritual life, but he praised God through song, and became a founding member of a gospel quartet, The Stars of Joy. In addition, Mr. Ross volunteered in numerous church choirs throughout the decades.
An avid bowler, he was recognized under the American Bowling Congress (ABC) as a member achieving high accolades throughout the 70s and 80s. Mr. Ross was still known for a league appearance at the local Royal Z Lanes during his retirement, he dedicated most of his time to maintaining his property. He was also an excellent roller skater who could dazzle you with his grace and dance moves in the rink.
In addition to his parents, Deacon Ross was preceded in death by his son, Lewis Ross Jr.; brothers, Clyde, Levi, George, Anthony, Melton, and Isaac; and his sisters Gloria, Geneva, Betty, May Francis, Laurie, Marion Lee, and Mildred.
Those who are cherishing his fond and precious memories are his devoted son, Lester Davis, adoring grandchildren, Clifton Ross, Lawren Moore, Christopher, Jonathan, Kiara, Derek Davis; his caring brothers, Bobby, Willie, Phillip, Joseph, and James; and his loving sisters, Lucille, Ella Louise, Virginia, and a host of loving great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and adopted family members; all of whom join the family in sharing the grief caused by his departure, but rejoice that he is resting with the Lord.
